Working in the garden

Growing up my grandfather had a fantastic garden. I remember summer salads with tasty homegrown veggies, and my favorite, zucchini! Grandpap can grow them like nobody else. When I first went away to college, I remember trying to find them in the store and being so disappointed they were so tiny.

There's a community garden I'm participating in, and it's HUGE! Each Saturday a group of us gathers and tends to the soil. It felt great to be digging in the soil, and of course the first harvest bounty of some chard to take home.

This was my first day, and I got to trim chard, plant carrots, and move some hay, and get really dirty! I found a little toad, which surprised me since there was no pond in site.

Perhaps I'm too much of a city girl to realize that toads can live in fields too. I picked him up and took him around to share and visit with everyone.

May 11, 2007 -

A family session for Shellie this afternoon. We played in the park, splashed in the creek, and experimented with some FLASH in the skate park. Most of my location work is done with pure natural light. Sometimes though, creative inspiration strikes and this session late in the day just called for some flashy.
Chanda Hinton

Last week I had the distinct honor of photographing Chanda Hinton, executive director of The Chanda Plan. Their mission is to help people with disabilities enjoy improved quality of life, health and function through complementary alternative treatments including, but not limited to acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic and physical therapy.

I first met Chanda through my friend, nutritionist Amy Keller (Pure Intentions for Life) Some of you may remember Amy from last year when I had my blood looked at under a microscope.) As Chanda told her story, I was struck by her charisma and knew I wanted to photograph her.

We discussed her vision of the images, and decided that going to the top of Flagstaff Mountain was going to be our location. As Chanda drove us to the top of the mountain, I realized that I've never taken anyone up there that was in a wheelchair. In fact, I've never photographed anyone like Chanda before. When we got to the top of the mountain, we pressed on to the Lost Gulch overlook. Chanda and Flint (her guide dog) blazed up the path to our first spot. The view was simply breathtaking, and Chanda got right to the edge of the cliff. So close that she was really making me nervous. Flint was excited with all the new smells and seeing a squirrel or two.

As we moved to the second spot, Chanda just blazed down the trail, and then pulled a total Dukes of Hazzard move cutting a full doughnut on the path! We laughed so hard during her session, she is so full of life!

When we got to the spot where you can see the Continental Divide, Chanda said she had never seen it before and set out to get as close again to her perfect spot. This one was a bit more tricky to get to, but we got her out there.

She raised her arms triumphantly, and I got some shots of her on top of the world!
More photos from Chanda's session.

Lauren's Headshot

Lauren is starting her internship and needed a headshot. I love to play with my subjects. It's so much fun to watch them transform from being nervous or not really wanting to be photographed to seeing their personality emerge.

Good Luck Lauren!

I rode (in) the Big Wiener!

I know that's a strange headline for a post, but it's a true story. I got a call from Marilyn as she was headed home this evening, "
The Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile is parked on your street!" I grabbed my camera, and went out to take a picture, and it started to drive away. I stood in the middle of the street and flagged it down, they stopped and said they were taking it for a drive around the neighborhood. Now you have to realize, it's 9:30pm on a Monday night. How could I let this golden opportunity pass me by, I asked to board the wiener. I stood there in the cold night wondering just what it was going to be like inside. Mustard, and Ketchup, Buns, and Wieners, I could just hear Homer Simpson's voice in my head.. hmmmm hot dogs... Finally, after some debate, I was granted access to the coveted inside of the wienermobile, one of the people inside (Megan) has taken my cycling class at the gym! I can only imagine that he must get asked by all sorts of riff raff come inside the wiener.

Thanks for telling them I was cool and not crazy Megan!

Megan, shows off her "wiener bling" a whistle.

I got to ride in the way back, on board we have Captain Dave, his friend Chris, Bradley, Megan and The Pegster. Dave told us stories about his adventures driving around the country and what it's been like to see the sights through the window of the 27' long Wienermobile. As we drove down Broadway, he played the song (Oh, I wish I were an Oscar-Mayer wiener; that is what I'd truly like to be. Cause if I were an Oscar-Mayer wiener, Everyone would be in love with me.)
