V-DAY BOULDER JOINS GLOBAL EFFORT TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS

"THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES"
Februay 27th & February 28th, 2009 at the St. Julian Hotel
March 10th, 2009 at the Boulder Theater
For the second year in a row VDay Boulder will present a benefit production of The Vagina Monologues to benefit Moving to End Sexual Assault (MESA), SHAPE, the peer education program of Boulder Valley Women's Health Center and Boulder County Aids Project (BCAP) and to help stop the violence against the women and girls of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This year's performance will have special guest performers including Nicole DeBoom (CEO,SkirtSports and Ironwoman Champion); Rebecca Luna (Rebecca's Apothecary); Sheila Carrigan (Carrigan Law); Janine D'Anniballe (Former Executive Director for MESA); Aimee Heckel (Editor, Womens Magazine) and Peggy Dyer (Peggy Dyer Photography).

Last year over 4000 VDay benefits took place around the world raising funds and awareness towards ending violence against women. Since 1998, VDay and these highly successful events have raised over $60 million for local beneficiaries working to end violence against women and girls. Hot on the heels of their success, VDay Boulder has joined this global movement as part of the VDay 2009 Community Campaign.
What is VDay?
VDay is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. VDay is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. VDay generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery. The VDay movement is growing at a rapid pace throughout the world, in 120 countries from Europe to Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, and all of North America.
VDay, a non-profit corporation, distributes funds to grassroots, national and international organizations and programs that work to stop violence against women and girls. A VDay Campaign is a catalyst for mobilizing women and men to heighten awareness about violence against women and girls. By creating this global community, VDay strives to empower women to find their collective voices and demand an end to the violence that affects one in three women in the U.S and around the world. VDay Boulder is a local effort within the worldwide context of the 2009 VDay Campaign.
What are The Vagina Monologues?
Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant" and by the Daily News as "intelligent" and "courageous," The Vagina Monologues, which was first performed off-Broadway by Ms. Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women's experiences. Ms. Ensler has performed the play to great acclaim throughout the world - from Zagreb to Santa Barbara, from London to Seattle, from Jerusalem to Oklahoma City.

About Moving to End Sexual Assault
MESA was formed in 1972 in response to the abduction, rape and shooting of two young girls. The organization was originally called Humans Against Rape and Molestation (HARM) and then Boulder County Rape Crisis Team. In 2001, the agency's name was changed to Moving to End Sexual Assault in order to better reflect the organization's mission - "We are moving to end sexual assault and the suffering it causes in our community. Every person has the right to live free of sexual assault. We challenge all forms of oppression and recognize their connection to sexual violence." MESA staff and volunteers work to achieve the mission statement by providing treatment for sexual assault and by providing prevention education. Moving to End Sexual Assault is a team of the Mental Health Center Serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties, Inc., a private, non-profit organization.
