On September 3, 2010 Peggy Dyer and Laurie Maves will present a new exhibit of over 522 faces from the One Million Faces Project. For 10 days during the month of March 2010, Peggy Dyer stood outside of a Whole Foods Market in Boulder, CO photographing people. In 10 days, she photographed 522 faces. This upcoming show will feature those 522 faces and many more. Come Feel the Love on September 3, 2010.

This is the "before" video of the gallery as Peggy explains her vision of the project, and begins "Once upon a yoga mat."

OM...One Million Faces is hanging in the Lincoln gallery at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. (2130 Arapahoe Avenue, Boulder, CO 80302, (303) 444-0202)through March 19th. Several community art events and photo shoots are scheduled for Friday, February 26th from 6-8pm and will include performances by local Denver musicians!

The OM show features numerous original works mixed media collages created by Peggy and members of the community from the photographs Peggy has taken during the past 8 months.
While the portrait of America unfolds, potentially millions of dollars can be raised for charities nationwide. Currently, The One Million Faces project donates their time and funds to the following charities: The Davis Phinney Foundation, The Chanda Plan, Team 25 - The Shjon Podein Children`s Foundation, MESA (Moving To End Sexual Assault) Program, and Rett Syndrome Research Trust.

Every Victory Counts!

Today is very exciting! The book project I've been working on with The Davis Phinney Foundation is heading to the printer!

The words inspiration and Parkinson’s don’t typically go together.

The truth is, Parkinson’s can strip people of momentum and hope. At the Davis Phinney Foundation, we're committed to helping people with PD and their caregivers find new ways to improve their lives today. We constantly look for ways to motivate and inspire people with PD. And in the process, we are continually inspired ourselves. Every day we meet people exploring new ways to live better with the disease. We've met people who are climbing mountains, running marathons, and even riding their bikes across the country. And we've met people who find victory in walking around the block. Because, in the end, it's not the size of the victory, but the recognition of it that counts. The motivation behind it. The inspiration it can provide to others.

In the end, it's about what we can do today to improve lives. And that is a victory in itself.

We're expecting the book to be available in January 2010.

Rett Syndrome Research Trust

Rett Syndrome (RS) is a neurological disorder that primarily affects your girls and women. For the first year or so, the girls with RS seem perfectly normal, but then they can lose the ability to walk, talk and use their hands properly. As the girls grow older, they often develop seizures, breathing disorders, scoliosis, and other difficulties. There currently is no known cure or treatment, but there is hope.

April was Parkinson's Awareness Month

April is nationally recognized as Parkinson’s Awareness month thousands in the Parkinson's community are advocating, educating and bringing awareness to the existence and reality of Parkinson’s Disease. Currently there are 1.5 million Americans living with Parkinson's disease and 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

On April 4th, I had the honor of photographing another Victory Summit for the Davis Phinney Foundation.

There were so many amazing moments throughout the day. Matt Ford, a specialist in Movement Science from the Physical Therapy Department at the University of Alabama go the whole room up and dancing around to the music of local band, "Flying Jenny."

There was a panel discussion with 3 patients about (DBS) deep brain stimulation. DBS uses a surgically implanted device (similar to a heart pacemaker) to deliver electrical stimulation to targeted areas in the brain that control movement, blocking the abnormal nerve signals that cause tremor and PD symptoms. It was a striking display when the DBS was turned off, the tremors became obvious until the unit was turned back on.

As is the tradition at the Victory Summit, Davis made a running leap for the stage. Davis spoke about the importance of moments of victory in each day, and got everyone hungry for a slice of apple pie.

He closed out the powerful and informative day with a Victory salute with the crowd.

#357 - John Popper

Tuesday night, March 31, John Popper of the Blues Traveler came over to Something Underground's warehouse to jam. The band Recycled Percussion, mid-tour, were already at the warehouse set up to rock with the brothers of SUG, along with some other friends - Scooter Barns, Todd Davis, and Satchel. It was a last minute planned jam session of epic proportions. Around 11:30pm, Justin Spencer of Recycled Percussion informed everyone that John would arrive in 20 minutes. The rest is history. The entire jam was recorded and parts of the recording will be released soon!!!! Also on the scene, taking fantastic photos, was Peggy Dyer. She captured the vibe through her gift of photography. Yesterday was a magnificent day in Longmont - sure it started out snowy, and overcast, my hopes were not as high as normal thinking that the turnout for the shoot might be smaller than expected with the weather. The opposite was true - I photographed 50 people yesterday at the Little Fig Baking Company! Thank you to everyone that came out.

Australia - I just finished watching Baz Luhrmann's epic film. WOW! I'm just blown away by the cinematography, his use of frame, color and light is .. well, EPIC! I can't believe I missed this film in the theaters, I saw Romeo and Juliet, several times, and Moulin Rouge at least 12 times, although I think my friend Craig might have seen it a few more times.

At the beginning we see what must be Baz's motto, as it appears in his films in so many ways. "A life lived in fear is a life half lived."

Throughout the movie, Nullah says and sings so many beautiful things, this gem resonates to my core.

I was driving down into Boulder on Thursday night, Bon Jovi, "Wanted Dead or Alive" was playing on the radio. My heart skipped a beat when I heard him sing "I've seen a million faces, and I rocked them all!"
Inspiration struck,

Last year over 4000 VDay benefits took place around the world raising funds and awareness towards ending violence against women. Since 1998, VDay and these highly successful events have raised over $60 million for local beneficiaries working to end violence against women and girls. Hot on the heels of their success, VDay Boulder has joined this global movement as part of the VDay 2009 Community Campaign.

What is VDay?

VDay is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. VDay is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. VDay generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery. The VDay movement is growing at a rapid pace throughout the world, in 120 countries from Europe to Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, and all of North America.

About Moving to End Sexual Assault
MESA was formed in 1972 in response to the abduction, rape and shooting of two young girls. The organization was originally called Humans Against Rape and Molestation (HARM) and then Boulder County Rape Crisis Team. In 2001, the agency's name was changed to Moving to End Sexual Assault in order to better reflect the organization's mission - "We are moving to end sexual assault and the suffering it causes in our community. Every person has the right to live free of sexual assault. We challenge all forms of oppression and recognize their connection to sexual violence." MESA staff and volunteers work to achieve the mission statement by providing treatment for sexual assault and by providing prevention education. Moving to End Sexual Assault is a team of the Mental Health Center Serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties, Inc., a private, non-profit organization.

Finding my center and loving myself - "I'm Stuck"

This morning during a private Yoga class with my friend, Tammy, I got stuck in child's pose.

Go ahead, giggle, its funny.

It's a true story! After some wonderful stretches and poses we retreated to the basic child's pose. Tammy was telling me how to position knees apart, reaching, REACHING out with my hands, finding breath and all that good stuff. When she wanted me to switch to down dog, I realized I was so stretched out I couldn't move. "I'm stuck" I said, and we laughed so hard - but I was all splayed out and couldn't get out of the pose so gracefully - like a swan dive into down dog - oh no, it was more like a Pegster face plant followed by a few minutes of giggles. When I said, I'm stuck, she thought I was kidding at first.

Warehouse JAM - I've been working on a personal project with some local Denver Musicians for about a year now. You've probably seen several posts about Something Underground over the past year, and now I understand that this work goes deeper than I ever imagined. It's kind of like the Moulin Rouge, Fire Dancers, Artists, I suppose we are the Bohemian's of this Revolution.

This weekend, I photographed them performing at Nissi's, then on Sunday at a JAM at their warehouse with other local musicians. We were in for a special treat though, Justin Spencer, The World's Fastest Drummer, here's a video of him appearing on Carson Daley's show playing with John Popper of Blues Traveller (here's another great YouTube video of Justin playing) flew in from Boston for the JAM.

Surrounding myself with creative souls, magic and moonlight has lit a fire inside me and struck a chord in my soul. These moments have made my other work explode with life, emotion and color. I'm finding my way back to my style, to my roots, and drawing on all those experiences of my life that bring me to each magical moment I photograph. On stage, or off.

Something Underground at Nissi's - I photographed another awesome show at Nissi's last night with my friends from Something Underground.

This series begins before the show up in the green room. Sophie and Reese are talking about the set list with Seth, as they make song requests and check that their favorite Something Underground songs are going to be played Reese starts requesting songs from other bands. Coldplay, The Fray, Sophie asks for Led Zeppelin's "The Immigrant Song." As I watched everything unfold, I could almost read Seth's mind. I imagine him thinking, "not another one Reese, come on buddy" and then Reese asks for another song by the Fray, Seth's head drops and Sophie offers to write out the lyrics for The Immigrant Song.

At the set break Seth brings the kids up to the stage, and adjusts the microphone.

After a wonderful introduction talking about the history of their family, Seth invites the next generation of his family to join them on stage and sing parts for "One Fish", a song inspired by the Dr Seuss classic, One Fish, Two Fish.

Everyone was really into it.

Seth shows Reese just how to rock out the hair while on stage.

For the first time ever, I jumped up and behind them to grab a shot from the stage. I couldn't resist the angle.

At the end of the song, Sophie knew exactly how to finish, Reese gave high 5's to his adoring fans. Good times!

Inauguration Day Photos, Pearl St Mall, Boulder, CO

I decided to head to the Boulder Theater to watch the Inauguration and all the festivities, but it was all sold out. Throngs of school kids wearing backpacks, people of all ages wearing shirts, buttons and huge smiles on their faces. undaunted, I stayed my course. I knew something monumental was happening, and I wanted to capture all the energy of the moment.

I noticed people headed into the Lazy Dog. I got my name on the list and they said it was community seating, every seat in the house would be full. I got one of the last seats in the bar, and just held my camera watching history unfold before my lens.

Once all the pomp and circumstance began, an absolute hush fell over the crowd. Silence, except for the words coming from the screen, everyone was riveted.

The music on this slideshow is from Dominic Lanza, a Boulder Musician, Dominic was playing patriotic tunes on the coronet just outside the Lazy Dog.

The Tonic Rays - I am so psyched to share this awesome news about my friend's band, The Tonic Rays. I met Joe Cummings and Marie Dance earlier this year while in Thailand. I got to hang with Joe and Marie because of Something Underground. They played a few shows there too, it was great to hang out watching musicians jam, sing, and dance with each other and feel the energy that flowed through my art as a result of those experiences.

I feel it like a river raging through me, so hang on for the ride.

The Tonic Rays make Billboard rock critic's top 10 picks of 2008 - December 24, 2008.

The Tonic Rays, founded by songwriters Marie Dance and Joe Cummings in the northwestern Thailand town of Pai in 2006, are the first Thailand-based band ever to be included in a US critic's annual top picks. In addition to Dance and Cummings, who handle vocals and guitars, and who hail from the UK and the USA respectively, the band features Thailand native Sun Ray on bass and Japan-born Mark Iwamoto on drums. A sales surge is anticipated over the coming weeks as a result of making Eddy's list, but the band is pressing more CDs to meet the unexpected demand. The Last Man Standing - A few years ago at the annual Heartzones® conference in Denver I met a man they call Pinkhouse. He got his nickname because his wife, Helen, wanted to paint their house pink. His real name is Paul Camerer, and he is turning 90 years old this week. To celebrate his birthday, Heartzones® with the help of his friends from the Pinkhouse gym, The Sally Edwards Company and Timex have organized a 5K Walk or Run called "The Last Man Standing" It begins tomorrow, Sunday December 21, 2008, at 1pm in Sacramento.

Join us! The entry fee is just $10, Packet pickup is at Nepenthe Clubhouse (corner of Swarthmore and Commons Dr - 111 Commons Drive, Sacramento CA. Pick up your packet at 1pm and then walk over to the Howe Ave Bridge and start the course. After you finish, join us back at the clubhouse for a lovely potluck dinner and celebrate Paul's birthday.

Pinkhouse has amazing cardiovascular fitness for a man his age. He has been running since the 60's, and has completed marathons, and races all over the country. In the photograph above, Annie and Pinkhouse exchange a friendly handshake before the Pinkhouse challenge while Dr Carl Foster watches in the background.

Pinkhouse started a gym in his garage, a cycling club to be more specific. And for the past 10 years friends and neighbors have gathered each morning with their bike to start the morning with a workout. The Pinkhouse Gym has actively participated in other community events here are some photos, courtesy of Pinkhouse gym members.

To enter the "Last Man Standing" 5K you must sign the waiver and informed consent release, read it carefully.

Signs are Everywhere - You've probably seen the movie "Bruce Almighty", there's a great scene at the beginning of the movie where he is ranting about needing to see a sign. He's driving behind a construction truck that has all kinds of road signs in the back, things like CAUTION, SLOW DOWN, etc.

When we're going through life so focused on what we think we want, we often miss the signs that are obviously right there in front of us.

One morning, after photographing a wedding up in Keystone, I saw Andy Warhol! Ok - I saw his likeness in reverse on the top of Buffalo Mountain.

Can you see it?

If you're ever in Pittsburgh, head over to the Andy Warhol museum. The exhibits are always rotating, and you just never know what you're gonna find.

My favorite spot on a recent visit was the silver cloud installation. I think I was in there for about 1/2 hour. It's something you just have to experience for yourself.

The Muppet Show - Things I grew up loving include but are not limited to; The Muppets, Sesame Street and all things Disney. I am the oldest of 3 kids, and was surrounded by the chaos of family, cousins and children. My parents were hard working blue collar folks, and taught us the value of hard work and the importance of family. My animated and furry friends helped me to dream.

Christmas is coming - I decided to try something new for my show next month at Ozo. I purchased a roll of canvas, and I'm printing my photos from Thailand. It's so wonderful to have art rolling off of my Fine Art Printer. I can't wait to stretch these, and apply some paint and textures.

Opening up the pages - Today is the first day I'm opening up my journal and sharing my creative process with the world. I feel a bit raw, vulnerable but most of all excited. I've been keeping journals actively since high school. Last week, they were all finally liberated from the boxes in my storage garage. I've got them within reach, and on display at my office, it's so powerful as an artist to be able to put your hand into and onto the process.

Through the Years - Here's a new collage from a family I've been photographing for 6 years now. As a baby in 2002, Max had these BIG eyes, and this great head of hair. Of course, looking at his dad, you can see that great hair runs in the family. Bella was very shy the first time I met her in 2005, I love the image in the top left corner from that session, juxtaposed with the one in the lower right corner from last month.

Giving Thanks - On November 1, 2007 at approximately 7:30 MST, my Grandfather, Steve Deli, passed away. I feel so blessed to have had him in my life well into my adulthood.

I shared a story about an afternoon I spent with him, and I received such an overwhelming response of love from so many people.

"It's in a time like this that the importance of my work becomes clear. I'm not just a photographer, I'm an observer, a journalist, an anthropologist of families, a historian entrusted with peoples most precious memories. I've been photographing people since high school; I've created millions of frames of places, people and things but most precious of all are those special memories that become frozen in time."

Now that he's gone, flipping through the photos today, I wish I had recorded his voice that day. All those stories he shared, his laugh, the sound of that Skoal can tapping and rolling on the table. Even just to hear him say, "I love you Peg, catch a big fish for me." That afternoon, I capturing so many expressions and little personal habits like touching his head and the way he crossed his legs. These photos are priceless, I would like to share that afternoon with you, please follow this link.

Mama Jo - This is a short excerpt from circle of life session with a family I photographed a few years ago. In addition to stills, we captured some video and more importantly, audio of the day.

After the newest baby's baptism, and the little party, and we settled into a spot on the couch and listened while Haley and Holly chatted with their Grandmother, Mama Jo.

It’s a story of how lives intertwine - one going out, another one beginning. It’s the circle of life indeed!

Doing this work in the world, makes my heart sing.

Eyes as Big as

This is Ella Rose, her eyes are indeed this beautiful, this big, and this blue.

This was a favorite image from their session in October. We were up at NCAR, it was a bit chilly, and the colors were just perfect.

I just delivered a 9x12 Canvas print for their home, and it is practically life size.

I love photographing children, it
brings so much joy to so many people.
